Dr. Michele Miller joined Campbell’s School of Engineering in January 2017 after spending 22 years as a mechanical engineering professor at Michigan Technological University. While serving as Associate Chair of the mechanical engineering-engineering mechanics (ME-EM) department at Michigan Tech, Dr. Miller led an effort to develop and implement a new undergraduate curriculum that increased the amount of project-based learning in the second and third years. Under the direction of Dr. Miller, in 2009 the ME-EM department initiated the first Peace Corps Masters International (PCMI) program in mechanical engineering in the country. The program combined MS study (including coursework and a research project) with a two-year Peace Corps assignment.  She advised MS students who served in Africa and South America.  

In research, Dr. Miller has made contributions to the diverse fields of precision machining, micro-electromechanical systems, and engineering education. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, NASA, State of Michigan, and industry.

 

Since 2006 Dr. Miller has been an ABET evaluator for mechanical engineering programs.  She joined the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Committee on Engineering Accreditation in 2013 and became an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commissioner in 2015.

Dr. Miller received a BS degree in mechanical engineering from Duke University in 1986 and MS and PhD degrees in mechanical engineering from North Carolina State University in 1991 and 1994, respectively. In between her bachelor’s and master’s studies, she was a manufacturing engineer at General Motors.
